MANILA, Philippines — Mike Phillips rallied behind La Salle coach Topex Robinson amid the controversy surrounding him from their first-round win over rival University of the Philippines last week in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.
Robinson had a lot to say after receiving stern warnings from the league over his heated exchange with UP player Reyland Torres that displayed “behaviors that do not reflect the values of sportsmanship upheld by the UAAP and Fiba.”
Phillips, who had 27 points, 17 rebounds, and five assists in their 77-68 win over the University of the East on Saturday said that all his coach wants is the best for their team.
UAAP: Topex Robinson sorry for actions, hurt over accusationsMANILA, Philippines — Coach Topex Robinson on Saturday apologized for his actions during La Salle’s first-round win over rival University of the Philippines last week and admitted he was hurt by accusations made against him.
Robinson broke his silence a week after the controversy, on the same day the UAAP released a statement saying it had given the coach and the UP guard “stern warnings” for their unsportsmanlike conduct.
Both parties dodged suspension because the league said that there was no “conclusive evidence” on the allegations that Robinson had spat on Torres and that the UP players used profanities against the coach.

La Salle stayed hot on the way to its fourth consecutive win after dealing the University of the East a second-round opening loss, 77-68, in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Green Archers leaned on Mike Phillips who erupted for 27 points and pulled down 17 rebounds other than his five assists, a pair of blocks, and a steal to avenge their first-round loss and end the Red Warriors’ hot streak at five straight games.
“The players really fought well, and they know the experience of losing to UE a few months ago so we just rekindled that and we just reminded them that, it’s gonna take a lot to really beat this really well-coached team,” coach Topex Robinson said.

UAAP: Sean Chambers preaches warrior mentality to young TamarawsMANILA, Philippines — Determined to unlock the full potential of the young Far Eastern University Tamaraws, coach Sean Chambers has been consistently preaching to his players the formula that worked for him in his great years in the PBA.
Every game is war.
“I explained to them a little bit about my history, playing against Alvin Patrimonio, playing against Allan Caidic, playing against Ginebra. We didn’t like each other playing, but right now, those are some of my closest friends because they respect how hard you play and how committed you were to your craft,” said Chambers, a longtime import for Alaska Milkmen in the PBA in the 90s.
‘UAAP: ‘Very weak’ start doomed Adamson in loss to FEU, says OJ OjarikreMANILA, Philippines—Adamson’s OJ Ojarikre was nothing but blunt following the Soaring Falcons’ loss to Far Eastern University in the second round of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.
Adamson succumbed to the Tamaraws in overtime, 76-72, at Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Both squads needed five more minutes to determine a winner but if you ask Ojarikre, they already lost in the first ten minutes.

Jorick Bautista was clutch once again as he led the Tamaraws with 21 points while Mo Konateh continues to be a vital piece for FEU as he had another double-double with 13 points and 26 rebounds apart from his four blocks.
“What I thought about this morning is we’re really, like, four and a half months into this journey with me as the head coach. And we’re starting to see the light on some of our offense and being in some of our schemes. And I just feel that these guys are just getting there, and they’re getting there, and they’re getting there,” coach Sean Chambers said after getting his second win in the league.

AT THE HALF: FEU 29, Adamson 25. END OF 1ST: Adamson 14, FEU 6. UAAP: Topex Robinson, Reyland Torres avoid suspensionMANILA, Philippines — There will be no suspensions for La Salle coach Topex Robinson and University of the Philippines guard Reyland Torres despite the “unsportsmanlike conduct” of both parties in their first-round match last week at Mall of Asia Arena.
The UAAP on Saturday released a statement regarding the verdict of Robinson’s alleged game-spitting incident with Torres, which led to a heated exchange in the third period of La Salle’s 68-56 win Sunday last week.
The La Salle coach and UP player were left off with “stern warnings,” confirming Inquirer Sports’ earlier report.
UAAP statement on incident involving Topex Robinson, Reyland TorresREAD: The UAAP has issued stern warnings to La Salle coach Topex Robinson and UP guard Reyland Torres for their “unsportsmanlike conduct” in their first round match last Oct. 6
UAAP: FEU stops Adamson streak in women’s basketballMANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University turned to EJ Lopez when it mattered most to send Adamson crashing, 67-64, and open the second round of the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament on a high note on Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Lopez poured in four triples in the fourth quarter including the go-ahead trey from the top of the key to give the Lady Tamaraws a precarious 65-64 lead with 1:02 remaining.
Victoria Adeshina missed a crucial layup on a fast break with 16 seconds left as Shane Salvani extended FEU’s lead to 67-64 with two made free throws.
UAAP: UE eyes confirmation, La Salle revenge in rematchLa Salle will have its return match against the team that put the only blemish in the Green Archers’ record so far in Season 87 of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
And with coach Topex Robinson likely getting out of that controversial spitting incident with just a “stern warning” to make sure that all hands are on deck for La Salle, how it deals with red-hot University of the East for the second time will be something worth seeing at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
More so because a 75-71 setback to the Red Warriors triggered a reawakening of the Archers, whose cornerstone Kevin Quiambao has embraced a new role to lead La Salle to four straight wins after that.
UAAP: Topex Robinson, Reyland Torres given ‘stern warning’–sourceMANILA, Philippines — La Salle coach Topex Robinson and University of the Philippines guard Reyland Torres will likely see action in the resumption of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament over the weekend after a “stern warning” from the league subcommittee.
Sources privy to the situation bared to Inquirer Sports that the subcommittee of the UAAP Board of Managing Directors, in coordination with the commissioner’s office, has recommended giving Robinson and Torres “a stern warning” after the alleged spitting incident during the La Salle-UP game.
This comes after a meeting that included both parties at Novotel on Thursday.
